This 35-minute suite of contrasting movements was influenced by all aspects of the composer’s upbringing in Suffolk and the special people who are part of his life. Written for full orchestra, it is a conscious, vibrant celebration of the rich tapestry of life and all its idiosyncrasies.
The seven movements are:
I Beginning: This suite introduction considers the beginning of life with a gentle opening, with slow-moving harmony, increasing in intensity to a rousing birth before fading away into sleep. Orchestration: Wood wind, Horns and Strings.
II Solace: A serene portrait of a late winter’s day by the side of the River Orwell with the setting sun creating sparkling patterns on the water while a bird song motif paints a picture of nature. Orchestration: Full Orchestra.
III Coming Home: A pop infused movement with an opening brass fanfare, unrelenting rhythms and soaring wood wind and string counter melodies. Instrumentation: Full Orchestra, Piano and Rock Drums.
IV Taking It: Cheeky and spiky, this presents a window on the world from the perspective of someone who dislikes being told what to do. Musical elements include syncopated brass and wood wind, and jazz styled harmony and dissonance, muted trumpet and trombone slides. Orchestration: Woodwind and Brass only.
V Pam’s Theme: A piece showcasing a film music style love theme in the style of John Williams. Orchestration: Full Orchestra.
VI IT’s More Than A Game: The movement depicts the emotional rollercoaster of supporting your favourite sports team, moving between excitement, despair and then joy in equal measure. Orchestration: Full Orchestra.
VII New Life: This brings the whole suite round in a full circle, with a celebration of a new life fifty-one years after the opening movement in a rousing finale full of pomp and power.
Orchestration: Full Orchestra plus Celesta / Piano. Sample audio extracts for four of these movements are available below:
